The Great Chicago Fire has been called the best-known fire in American history, killing more than 250 people, leaving 100,000 homeless, and burning more than 2,000 acres. In commemoration of this event, Fire Protection Week was established to keep the public informed about the importance of fire prevention. This year's Fire Prevention Week theme, which runs from October 5-11, is: Working Smoke Alarm Save Lives; Test Yours Every Month.
