These multi-million dollar complexes have decreased in size but increased in complexity, sophistication and value. A fire in a major communication facility can wipe out phone services or Internet access worth billions of dollars in business to end-users. Typically a central office contains row after row of electronics with hundreds of miles of wiring in cable trays overhead, and personnel is at a minimum.

An electrical fire almost always starts by overheating in an electronic component or from natural phenomena like lightning.

The overall value of the majority of these communications facilities as well as the critical importance of the services provided, dictate a protection system that is capable of minimizing fire-related downtime. The situation calls for an active FM200 Automatic Suppression System integrated with an exceptionally fast Air Sampling Smoke Detection system.

Reliable and sufficient early detection is particularly challenging in modern communication facilities. High air-flow rates, high ceilings, horizontal air currents and numerous overhead obstructions combined, severely challenge traditional smoke detection strategies. Air Sampling Smoke Detection systems have demonstrated capabilities that meet these challenges and should be considered for use in all Communications Facilities.
